Arsenal are aiming to use youngster Joel Campbell as a makeweight in a deal for long-term target William Carvalho this summer, according to reports in Portugal.
Portuguese daily O Jogo leads with a story focusing on the idea that Sporting Lisbon are keen on Campbell, who was oh so impressive at last summer’s World Cup, and as a result the Gunners are trying to work the interest into their transfer plans.
Carvalho, a sturdy defensive-midfielder by trade, has been linked with a move to the Premier League on and off for the past two years and is widely regarded one of the most exciting young talents in football.
Despite the fact that the 23-year-old has a £30 million price-tag on his head it’s believed Arsenal want to send Campbell the other way, presumably in a bid to lower the cost, and O Jogo even claim that Arsene Wenger sees Carvalho as a priority target.
If being shown the Emirates Stadium exit door is his eventual fate Campbell will certainly feel that he hasn’t been given a fair shake by Wenger all things considered.
The Cost Rica international was in fine form at the World Cup finals in Brazil, as well as impressing on loan at Olympiacos last season, but still returned to north London only to be shipped out on loan to Villarreal.
It must be said that whilst with The Yellow Submarine Campbell has failed to look the part, having not managed to find the back of the net in any of his appearances this season. In contrast Arsenal have boasted more than one prolific frontman, with Alexis Sanchez having tallied 16 Premier League goals so far in his debut campaign in England and Olivier Giroud boasting 14 himself.
A fair trade
Indeed it looks like a fair trade when it’s considered that Arsenal are pursuing a defensive midfielder anyway.
Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin have been the named targets thus far, but a deal that would see them get a player like Carvalho, whilst also giving Wenger one less headache in the striking apartment, could be a more favoured option.
