Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal may have plans to sign Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne this summer, but he’ll almost certainly have to offer the England international first-team assurances if he’s to be successful. The player himself made clear with his latest comments about his future that his agent is currently negotiating over a new deal with the Saints, and that he simply wants to play football at this time. That means that unless Van Gaal can promise him a starting berth the deal could be virtually dead in the water, and that’s a scenario the Dutchman doesn’t want to see unfolding. Meanwhile the latest big rumour, coming courtesy of Spanish journalist Guillem Balague, sees United linked with another bid for Nicolas Otamendi. The Argentinian has been a long-term target for the Red Devils, but a new and improved offer will be needed to prise him from Valencia. Balague thinks that is to be forthcoming.
