Manchester United have put a 'massive offer on the table' in an attempt to keep hold of goalkeeper David de Gea, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.
As reported by Sky Sports, Balague has insisted that the player's long term future in the game remains uncertain, with Spanish giants Real Madrid hoping to secure his services in the upcoming transfer window.
In fact, Balague claims that De Gea is waiting to see what happens to current Real No.1 Iker Casillas before committing his future to the Red Devils.
It appears that Casillas, who has starred between the sticks at the Bernabeu for many years, could leave the club this summer, but it remains to be seen as to whether the United man takes his place.
No De Gea decision
"Gareth Bale is definitely staying at Real Madrid, while De Gea is the more mysterious one.
"He wants to see what Casillas is doing – Real Madrid is trying to push Casillas out and Manchester United is putting a massive offer on the table, so no decision made there yet."
It appears, then, that the transfer saga involving the United shot-stopper looks set to rumble on for a while yet.
For now, though, United fans will be hoping that De Gea puts in a few more good performances before the end of this campaign, as the Red Devils go in search of securing their place in next year's Champions League competition.
After three straight defeats, the Red Devils hold a four point lead over rivals Liverpool with three league games remaining. Van Gaal' side travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace this weekend and will be determined to get back to winning ways.
It won't be easy
Keeping De Gea though, certainly isn't going to be easy for the Manchester United hierarchy. At the end of the day, if Balague is to be believed and the club really have put a huge offer down to keep the Spaniard, then there has to be a reason why he's not signing the deal.
Let's be honest, after all this speculation, that reason probably is Real Madrid, but United chiefs must still do all they can to convince the player to stay on for the foreseeable future.
Ultimately, over the course of the last two years, De Gea has been the club's standout player, and looks set to win the club's Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year at the end of the season.
Keeping De Gea will allow Van Gaal to build a platform for future success as the shot-stopper will only continue to go from strength-to-strength over the coming years.
