The very first member of the Give Me Sport, NHL Fallen Stars Club is the Carolina Hurricanes captain and Stanley Cup champion, Eric Staal.

Eric Staal was once viewed as one of the top players in the NHL and has really taken a massive fall from grace in recent years with the Hurricanes franchise, leaving fans questioning whether or not a change of scenery would bring Staal back amongst the NHL's elite.

Back in the 2005-06 season, Staal had a massive year recording 100 points in 82 games and more importantly, winning the Stanley Cup.

Declining Points

Since the Stanley Cup win, Staal was never as explosive but was still considered one of the top players in the league. In the lock out shortened season, the Hurricanes captain put up 53 points in 48 games.

Unfortunately for the last two seasons Eric Staal hasn't been the force that every other team in the NHL was afraid of. He put up 61 points in 2013-14 and 54 points in 2014-15, respectable numbers for most but not for the star of your team who was almost at a point per game before the previous two seasons.

Potential Trade?

So maybe the former star does need a new place to call home, some have heard rumours of the Toronto Maple Leafs being possible suitors.

Then again, maybe Eric Staal is already past the prime years of his career, although he is just 30 years of age, things are not looking bright for the Carolina captain.

Welcome to the NHL Fallen Stars Club, Eric Staal. Hopefully you don't over stay your welcome.
