Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is set to make a serious statement about his side’s trophy ambitions this summer by spending a hefty £200 million in the transfer market.
When the Dutchman joined last year he was gifted access to a lucrative financial pool and splashed out £150m on the likes of Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera.
Van Gaal budget
Those players have settled in with mixed fortunes but the overall aim appears to have been achieved, and once again Van Gaal will reinforce his squad with high-profile names as he seeks to restore United to the superpower they were under Sir Alex Ferguson. £200m is the said kitty at his disposal this time around, and he'll want to spend every penny of it, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Holland playmaker Memphis Depay was the first port of call, as evidenced by the fact that Van Gaal was said to have been meeting with the player to discuss terms. The midfielder’s agreement with United was confirmed yesterday to the tune of €25m, meaning that by the time the summer transfer window opens the Red Devils will already have clinched the signature of a player deemed a priority target.
The all powerful list
The emphasis then is sure to switch to others such as Mats Hummels, Nathaniel Clyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Gareth Bale, despite the fact the latter could cost £80m on his own. Yesterday it was reported that United were ready to give up any planned pursuit for Bale as they deem him too costly, but ambitious interest remains.
The chase for Borussia Dortmund duo is far more feasible what with Jurgen Klopp’s exit set to instigate a summer of transition. Gundogan has already said that he’s moving on to pastures new, whilst Hummels isn’t likely to wait around when Dortmund can’t offer him first-team football, and this summer is as good a time for him to take his leave as he’ll ever get.
Then there’s Clyne, who finds himself linked with both United and newly-crowned Premier League champions Chelsea after his impressive season with Southampton.
The England international’s agent is currently negotiating a new deal with the Saints hierarchy, but Van Gaal is believed to be confident of convincing him to do otherwise, and if Clyne has ambitions to match his ability a departure looks on the cards.
