Costa Rican hit-man Joel Campbell found himself at the forefront of media attention during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Campbell guided his nation all the way to the quarter finals of the competition, before eventually falling short in a penalty shoot-out against the Netherlands. Returning to Arsenal for pre-season last summer, Campbell had an enjoyable Emirates Cup, scoring a well taken goal against Benfica.
When the Premier League season kicked off however Campbell found his first team opportunities few and far between. In January of 2015 he moved to Spanish outfit Villarreal as part of a deal that saw Gabriel Paulista move the other way.
While on loan at Villarreal, Campbell has been unable to find the net in 19 appearances. In fact, all Campbell has managed this season is one solitary assist in the Under-21 Premier League for Arsenal.
It should come as no surprise then that Campbell is being linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium. It has been suggested, via the Evening Standard, that should Arsenal re-ignite their interest in Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho, then Campbell would be used as a bargaining tool in that deal.
For a player who showed so much promise in the World Cup it is a great shame that there is talk of him leaving north London. Campbell only has one year left on his current deal with Arsenal, and it looks highly unlikely that he will put pen to paper should a new contract be offered.
From what we've seen of Campbell, however brief that may be, in the Premier League this season, he still looks like he has a lot to offer the Gunners. Unfortunately for the Costa Rican, it appears that his Arsenal move will not materialise into the dream that he'd once wished.
