A mid-table clash in Serie A hardly soundly like it's going to provide many talking points. However, former Liverpool loanee Daniele Padelli, the Torino goalkeeper, ended up scoring the only goal of the game. The only problem for Padelli, it was an own goal.
Seeing goalkeepers make mistakes that lead to goals is nothing uncommon. Daniele Padelli, however, decided he wanted to go one better and actually score the only goal in Torino's 1-0 home defeat to Empoli.
Seeing Empoli get on the scoresheet is not uncommon - star player and captain Massimo Maccarone already has 10 goals to his name this campaign. One thing no-one expected was experienced keeper, 29-year-old Daniele Padelli, to make a crucial mistake less than three minutes into the tie.
Torino defender Emiliano Moretti played what seemed like a simple ball back to his goal keeper. Although the pass was bobbling slightly, and Padelli was being closed down by Empoli forward Maccarone, it just looked like early game nerves and a lack of confidence that resulted in the ball traveling into the back of Torino goal.
When keepers score own goals, normally you can clearly see a cataclysmic mistake that results in a goal. For Padelli however, he just seemed to calmly slot the ball into the corner of his own goal.
For the angle of which Padelli received the pass, and in turn was looking to play the ball, his position was all wrong.
Not only that, but as a goalkeeper you can not afford to make rookie mistakes like that. Padelli should have just hit the ball into row z. At such an early stage in the game, there is no need to take such a risk in-front of your own goal.
