Arsene Wenger says he likes Memphis Depay but could not enter the race to sign him because he has too many players in the same position.
The Dutchman, who yesterday all but sealed a £25million move to Manchester United, had attracted interest from Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham.
Having scored 21 goals in the Eredivisie for PSV Eindhoven this season , a number of Arsenal fans were left wondering why the Arsenal boss had not challenged Louis van Gaal for Depay's signature.
Now Wenger has provided a timely explanation, saying he was well aware of the 21-year-old's exceptional talent, but simply could not justify reinforcing an area already bulging with talent.
He also reassured fans that he will be active in the transfer market, but is saving his money for players Arsenal actually need.
He likes him
Wenger told reporters: “I like the player but in that position we have plenty. He plays wide and we have seven or eight players who can play there.
"We have a squad of top quality. If we can strengthen our squad then of course we will do it."
Where would he have fit in?
It is a fair call from Wenger regardless of Depay's talent.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Serge Gnabry, Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and the on-loan Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell are all capable of fulfilling a similar role to Depay.
It is fair to say that both Podolski and Campbell have no future at the Emirates, but the signing of Depay would have surely been the end for Walcott as well.
A replacement for Walcott?
The England international is already struggling to get into the starting XI and is stalling on a new contract as a result. With just over 12 months to run on his current deal, there is already a chance he could leave due to a lack of first-team action.
But having sustained a serious knee injury and after failing to reach his once enormous potential, there would be a number of Arsenal fans who would have liked to have seen Wenger swap Walcott for Depay.
Right or wrong?
Was Arsene Wenger right to reject the chance to sign Memphis Depay or, Britain's electorate, has he made a tremendous mistake?
