Fernando Torres took to Instagram to pay his respects to both his former clubs as Steven Gerrard left Stamford Bridge to massive applause from both Chelsea and Liverpool fans.

This was the last time Gerrard would play against Chelsea in the Premier League and he marked the special occasion by heading in the equaliser as Liverpool held the champions 1-1.

Torres, who spent four years playing alongside Gerrard, said the Liverpool captain was "the best player he has ever played with".

His message

Yesterday at Stamford Bridge @chelseafc fans show their respect to the legend @stevengerrard . Rivalry apart this is what is football about. So proud to the two clubs I have play in England. #Respect

It is no secret to anyone in football how close Gerrard came to signing for Chelsea in 2005 but the Liverpool skipper remained loyal and chose to stay at his boyhood club.

After the game at the weekend, Mourinho and Gerrard explained the respect they have for one another and Gerrard admitted he nearly signed with Mourinho on three different occasions.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Gerrard said: "He’s the best manager in the world. I would have signed for him three times if I wasn’t a Liverpool fan.

"But you know I love this club. I thought, If I win a couple of trophies at Liverpool, it’ll mean more than if I win 10 or 12 for Chelsea, Inter Milan or Real Madrid."

Gerrard will complete his move to LA Galaxy in the summer and will join former England teammate Frank Lampard in the MLS as he will finally join New York City following his season-long loan at Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Torres future is still in question where he will be next season. The Spanish striker  signed for AC Milan on a permanent deal in December but has rediscovered his form whilst on loan at Atletico Madrid.
