"With the 18th pick in the fifth-round of the 2013 NFL draft the Dallas Cowboys select Joseph Randle, running back from Oklahoma State."

Randle was drafted by the Cowboys in the fifth-round to become the heir apparent for the often injured DeMarco Murray. Fast forward a few years and the time is now for Joseph Randle to take his place as the lead running back for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys decided to move on from DeMarco Murray this off-season by not offering him the contract he believed he deserved. They also came out of the 2015 Draft without any of their selections coming at the running back position.

Huge competition

The Cowboys have Joseph Randle, Ryan Williams, Lance Dunbar, and Darren McFadden under contract for the 2015 season.

The signing of McFadden leads most to believe that he enters the season at the top of the depth chart, but it is my opinion that his signing was mostly due to Randle’s maturity level. To state it simply, McFadden is most likely an insurance policy in case Randle gets in trouble again.

In limited opportunities last year Randle was able to show why the Cowboys selected him back in the 2013 draft. He is a great fit for the zone blocking scheme that the Cowboys employ. He has the vision that is required to read the blocks of his linemen and plant his foot in the ground to create positive yards. He is a one cut runner with enough breakaway speed to become a dangerous weapon in the running game.

Ever improving

He is also a good receiver out of the backfield to complement the passing game. He has become a better pass protector in his time with the Cowboys, but it is an area in which he can improve so that he can become an every down back.

While many people outside the organization may feel as if the Cowboys should bring in a veteran running back to help the running game, those within the organization seem to feel as if they might have that running back on the roster.

It is Joseph Randle’s job to lose at this point and it’s not every day that these opportunities come around.

Opportunity knocks for you Joseph Randle, and your time is now!
