Adnan Januzaj served Louis van Gaal a timely reminder that he is still one of Manchester United's best young talents after grabbing a goal and an assist against Manchester City in an Under-21 match on Tuesday night.
The Belgian wonderkid was the starlet of the show at Old Trafford last season, but his position the squad seemed to leave along with David Moyes.
Upon arrival last summer, Van Gaal immediately implemented a 3-5-2 formation leaving Januzaj without a defined role in the squad.
It resulted in a demotion to the Under-21 team where he would be forced to play in front of crowds of hundreds rather than tens of thousands.
But that has not stopped the winger from trying his damnedest to get back into the first-team as his man of the match performance exemplified.
The local derby started with Manchester City very much on the front foot, but Januzaj killed to relentless pressure from the Citizens with a devastating through ball.
Wilson buried the resulting one-on-one and Manchester United never looked back. They held their lead until the break but the little Red Devils would turn to Januzaj once again to double their lead.
The 20-year-old received the ball on the edge of the City penalty area before skipping past two tackles and firing past the helpless Angus Gunn.
Ahead of the summer transfer window, where Van Gaal is expected to spend big money once again, a performance like this definitely serves in his favour.
Van Gaal may have been ready to go out and sign Gareth Bale, leaving Januzaj facing an almost certain Old Trafford exit.
He may also, however, put himself squarely in the shop window. Everton are known admirers of the Belgium international while PSG have been linked in the past.
If Januzaj is to leave, it would most likely be on a temporary basis. It would be hard to see Van Gaal agreeing to let such an exciting talent leave before barely giving him a chance.
Should Manchester United allow Adnan Januzaj to leave on loan to gain vital first-team experience?
