After 17 years with Liverpool's first team, Steven Gerrard is preparing to say farewell to his footballing home against Crystal Palace this Saturday, May 16.
The day will be all about Liverpool's skipper, who is arguably the biggest legend of them all on Merseyside.
Equally, Liverpool's game against Palace is vital for securing their Europa League hopes indefinitely, in which a win will guarantee them that achievement.
Despite the clear excitement around the financial gain and appeal to new players by qualifying for Europe, the game will be all about Gerrard - and Liverpool's fans and players can be forgiven for being distracted by the sense of occasion.
I've criticised Liverpool's obsession with Gerrard's final season a lot this year. When asking Liverpool fans why they wanted to win the FA Cup, the response was 'Gerrard's parting gift' or 'the best birthday present for Gerrard'. Subsequently they were knocked out, deservedly so I might add, and Gerrard's fairytale ending to his Liverpool career will not become a reality.
The game against Palace however offers the perfect opportunity to pay respects to one of the greatest Liverpool and England midfielders of all time. Although I do criticise Liverpool a lot, I do understand the importance of this game to the club and to an icon of the game.
Just give Gerrard every free-kick, penalty and corner possible, he deserves a goal on his Anfield farewell and the majority of football fans hope he gets it.
To anyone looking to attend Gerrard's last game, I'd suggest watching it at the pub with other Liverpool fans, then fly out to watch the Champions League final instead. You'll have just as much fun and still have some change left over.
Tickets for Gerrard's final game at Anfield are reportedly as high as £1,324. The price reported is over £450 higher than tier one season tickets at Anfield. Although I'd be surprised to see anyone pay that much for it, expect people to pay hundreds of pounds to go and see their hero one last time.
