Manchester United defender Chris Smalling's hot tub reportedly caught fire yesterday evening.
As first reported by the Manchester Evening News, firefighters attended Smalling's house in Bowdon, Altrincham, referred to as 'millionaires' row' by MEN, after his tub went up in flames.
Smalling was reportedly not in at the time of the incident yesterday evening, which may have been caused by an electrical fault.
Police on patrol identified smoke coming from the back of a residence in Bowdon, and upon further investigation found that the hot tub and portion of the property's decking had caught fire.
Emergency crews arrived on the scene and a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said today: "Just after 8pm on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, a crew from Altrincham Fire Station attended a house in Altrincham after reports of a fire in a back garden."
Speaking to MEN, watch manager Stuart France said a quick response from the fire crew and a good spot by the police meant that what could have been a serious incident was handled swiftly.
"When we arrived it was quite a large fire involving a whirlpool bath and decking, which could easily become something more serious.
"The police officers who were at the scene used a garden hose on the fire and when we arrived we extinguished it using a hose reel. The most likely cause was an accidental electrical fault.”
Smalling is believed to have not been home during the fire, and a post on his Instagram account shows him enjoying a poker night with friends during the Barcelona vs Bayern Munich Champions League game.
Smalling at United
The Manchester United defender has made 23 Premier League appearances for the Old Trafford club this season, scoring four goals.
Although it's been arguably Smalling's best season in a Manchester United shirt this campaign, Louis van Gaal is rumoured to be on the lookout for a new central defender, likely to replace the young England international.
Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels is one potential target for van Gaal.
What do you think Manchester United fans - should van Gaal stick with Smalling or sign another defender in the summer?
