A change of scenery could be in store for one of the world's top players following Bayern Munich's 3-0 humiliation in last week's Champions League semi-final versus Barcelona.
According to multiple reports, including the Daily Mirror, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is prepared to offer a big sum to Bayern Munich for forward Thomas Muller. This comes in the wake of Muller's bust-up with Bayern boss Pep Guardiola after being substituted at the Camp Nou.
George Bellshaw reports that United is willing to pay £45 million for Muller, who has previously said: "Louis van Gaal and I have a relationship that goes beyond that which is normal between a player and a coach." It was indeed van Gaal who gave Muller his debut on Bayern's first team in 2008.
Once again, Muller has been one of Bayern's top contributors this season despite being deployed in a crowded attack, scoring 20 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions to go along with 14 assists.
Despite being one of Bayern's more dangerous players last Wednesday, Muller was substituted after Barcelona's first goal in favour of Mario Gotze, leading to a touchline spat with Guardiola.
Lionel Messi then proceeded to add his second just moments later as shambolic Bayern defending allowed for a moment of magic.
It is reported that Muller may consider leaving Guardiola for the warmer touch of Van Gaal, helped by the fact that Manchester United will return to the Champions League after a one-year hiatus.
It would certainly be quite a coup if Manchester United were able to conclude a deal for Muller and, of course, it would raise further doubts over the future of Robin van Persie and, even more so, Radamel Falcao.
