Manchester United's new signing Memphis Depay has ambitions to one day become the 'best player in the world.'

Speaking to the BBC, the Dutch international revealed his desire to become the world's best player in an interview with Football Focus to be shown this weekend.

The 21-year-old is Manchester United's first signing of the summer, for a fee believed to be in the region of £31m. The PSV Eindhoven star has scored 21 goals this season and has been compared to Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, the current holder of the Ballon d'Or as the world's best player.

However, many regard Barcelona's Lionel Messi as the best player of 2015 so far, and Depay has plenty to prove if he truly wants to be mentioned in the same breath as Messi and Ronaldo.

There's no harm in having the ambition though, and Manchester United fans are understandably excited at having clinched the first big deal of the summer window.

Busy summer

It's unlikely to be the last either for United, with club chief executive Ed Woodward confirming earlier this week that Louis van Gaal will be heavily backed in the transfer market.

The Old Trafford club are in a much stronger position this summer than last, when they spent £150m on the likes of Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria.

In all likelihood, van Gaal will be able to approach targets with the carrot of Champions League football this time around, with the club all but certain to qualify for next season's competition following their 2-1 away victory over Crystal Palace last weekend.

Central midfield, central defence and striker are three positions van Gaal may seek to strengthen over the next few months, with Radamel Falcao expected to depart at the end of the season.

Who do you think van Gaal should sign Manchester United fans?
