Ilkay Gundogan has not agreed transfer yet

Ilkay Gundogan says his future still remains undecided having requested to leave the club during the imminent summer transfer window. The German has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal.

There has been speculation for some time regarding Gundogan’s next step and it was confirmed earlier this month by BVB that the player had indeed asked for permission to pursue a move before next season.

This served to strengthen links to Manchester United and Arsenal as both Louis van Gaal and Arsene Wenger seemingly consider midfield reinforcements, while there have also been suggestions he may join Barcelona.

Gundogan, however, speaking to Bild on Saturday claimed he had “nothing to announce” and conjecture regarding the 24-year-old’s destination will continue to persist as the campaign reaches its climax.

With his contract due to expire next year, Dortmund seem likely to grant Gundogan his wish to leave rather than lose him for nothing and, were he to be sold before the transfer deadline, the Bundesliga club could supposedly command £20 million.

It is a fee that would not prove to be beyond Manchester United or Arsenal, and it will be interesting to see if either do indeed pursue Gundogan given that Van Gaal and Wenger will consider recruiting holding players.

Both managers will, however, be wary of recruiting a player with such a chequered injury history, given the issues they have had to endure at Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium respectively this term.
