On Raw Monday night, John Cena issued yet another open challenge for his United States Championship after a brutal, yet successful defense against a very game Rusev in an 'I Quit' match at Payback.
Only this U.S. Title challenge was not actually answered. It was however graced with the presence of the most unexpected of competitors, NXT Champion Kevin Owens.
The two exchanged pleasantries, introducing themselves to each other, which was then followed by Owens describing to Cena what happened with Sami Zayn.
The information on Owens’ appearance on Raw was leaked on Triple H’s twitter account with the hashtag “#TheFutureIsNow.”
No one, however, expected what was to follow. Words were said between the two competitors. John Cena eluded to the fact of Owens being new to the WWE. Owens emphatically addressed this with the simple fact that he has been wrestling for 15 years and longer than Cena.
After denying John Cena an opportunity to defend his United States Championship, the NXT Champion answered with “I am a prize fighter”, “I already have a championship” and “you and I will fight one day.”
After this, he kicked Cena in the gut, Irish whipped him across the ring and ended his physical assault with his patented pump up power bomb that he used to end the title reign of Sami Zayn.
Kevin Owens made his statement more impactful by picking up the United States title and dropping it beside Cena and stomping his foot on top of it. The statement was in fact made without a match ever happening. It is safe to say that Kevin Owens is ready for Wednesday nights NXT Take Over: Unstoppable. And more important than this fact, Kevin Owens is ready for the main roster.
The question still remains though, will we see Owens defend against Zayn or will the winner of the triple threat get that NXT honor? Or will we see John Cena grace the NXT Universe with a more than rare appearance?
Either way, Kevin Owens has once again lived up to his reputation as wrestling’s most controversial figure.
