After five years of waiting Chelsea fans are finally able to celebrate the club being Premier League Champions again. However there are signs that this team is not yet the complete article and work is needed from Jose Mourinho over the summer to fill the remaining gaps in what is a strong team.
Chelsea have been lucky enough to have two world class Goalkeepers this season with club legend Petr Cech as a backup to the new number one Thibaut Courtois. However it is unlikely Cech will want to warm the bench for large periods of another season. Chelsea may have to let him go, in which case a top class back up goalkeeper is needed. There has been reports Chelsea are looking at John Ruddy of Norwich City. This would be a good signing and fill the potential gap left by Cech. Of course if Cech decides to stay, this isn't such a problem.
This is where I see the biggest issue in the Chelsea team. This is not to say John Terry, Gary Cahill or Kurt Zouma are not good players, but the Blues need a top class defender to supplement them if Terry or Cahill were to get injured.
I would describe the Chelsea defence this season as inconsistent until the key games in the run in where they have showed how good they are. Games at Everton (won 6-3) and Spurs (lost 5-3) as well as at Newcastle (lost 2-1) showed vulnerabilities that I suspected were there before the season started; Terry and Cahill are not the fastest players around and Harry Kane left them for dead at White Hart Lane on New Years Day.
Talk is that Mourinho wants to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. It would be an excellent signing and provide a key player who can share the defensive responsibilities with Terry & Cahill, leaving Zouma to improve as back up to Matic and Ramires in the defensive midfield roles. John Obi Mikel has been a very good player for Chelsea over the years but I feel he will be surplus to requirements if Varane arrives and Zouma improves to be able to fill a role in both the back four or as a defensive midfielder.
Chelsea have what is probably the strongest midfield in the Premier League and one that can be right up with Europe's finest.
Eden Hazard has shown this season that he is more than capable of being on a par Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Chelsea need to keep him, along with Willian who has shown some incredible pace and skill this season. However I see a problem should one of them pick up an injury, which is quite likely considering Hazard is the most fouled player in the league.
Signing a versatile attacking midfielder like Koke would be a good move and would add the finishing touches to names like Fabregas, Hazard, Willian, Oscar and Cuadrado, making Chelsea's midfield unstoppable.
Jose Mourinho showed his skill as a manager by identifying that Chelsea's biggest problem during the 2013/14 season was a lack of a striker that could score plenty of goals. Hence the signing of Diego Costa along with Loic Remy and the return of Didier Drogba.
Costa was brilliant until his hamstring injury came back and sidelined him for the remainder of the season, with Remy out too Drogba has lead the line as Chelsea secured the remaining points needed to be Champions.
However the signs are Drogba isn't the player he once was and no new contract has been agreed for next season. With Costa and Remy struggling with injury Jose will surely be looking to sign another decent striker over the summer to maintain strength in depth. Koke can play in a striker role which is another good reason sign him and there are rumours that the club is looking at Fluminense forward Kenedy, another good option.
Of course Financial Fair Play restrictions mean Chelsea cannot simply buy these players at will but here's hoping Jose Mourinho and Roman Abramovich can make this team the finished article over the summer and then the sky would be the limit for Chelsea next season. Congratulations to the Champions, it has been a very good season and a joy to watch (not boring!) and if the above can happen over the summer next season will be even better.
