Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has turned his attentions to Holland goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen and will make a £25 million bid for the 26-year-old if David de Gea moves to Real Madrid this summer.
That’s according to the Daily Mirror, who claim that United are lining up a move for Holland’s number one stopper, who was Van Gaal’s first choice at last summer’s World Cup, because the Old Trafford manager has been advised to by goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek.
It’s believed Hoek is a staunch admirer of Cillessen and has told Van Gaal as much. The Ajax star is of a similar build to De Gea and Hoek’s opinion is that he could be moulded into a Premier League sensation in the same way the Spaniard was following his arrival from Atletico Madrid back in 2011.
If signed Cillessen would become the second Dutch star to be recruited this summer by Van Gaal following the news that an agreement has been reached between United and PSV for Memphis Depay. Last summer Daley Blind was purchased by the Red Devils, perhaps indicating that a Dutch core is what he is aiming for in the long run.
It’s needless to say of course that Cillessen will only be seriously considered if De Gea abandons ship in favour of a return to Spain, something that he’s sure to be strongly talked into not doing if Van Gaal has the chance.
Strong resolve for De Gea
The latest rumours claim that he will be offered an incredible contract deal to pledge his future to United, though the chance to become Real’s number one, thereby replacing Santiago Bernabeu stalwart Iker Casillas, might prove too attractive a proposition to turn down.
One thing’s for sure and that’s that Real’s interest in De Gea is genuine. Given that Casillas has endured another uncertain season Florentino Perez wants his next Galactico to significantly bolster the defence his club boasts, and the acquisition of the very in-form De Gea would fall in line with his agenda of signing a world-renown talent each summer.
Other options for United
From United’s point of view though they might be able to do better that Cillessen all things considered.
Recently they’ve been linked with moves for both Hugo Lloris and Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic, both of whom have extended experience in the Premier League and so wouldn’t need as much time to settle. On the other hand there’s also Victor Valdes to fall back on, a proven performer at the highest level, and so Van Gaal will have a tough decision to make if De Gea twists his arm.
