With relegation seemingly imminent, it is safe to say that Hull City fans will be fearing the worst when their side face Manchester United at the KC Stadium on Sunday.
The Tigers require no less than three points against the 20-time champions to stand any chance of avoiding the drop, but even then will they still need Newcastle to slip up against West Ham when the two meet at St. James' Park.
Hope, therefore, is bleak, but in a random act of kindness, betting company Betfair announced this morning that they have dropped a 'Fan Parachute Package' containing £5000 over the city to be claimed by one 'lucky' fan.
The gesture, carried and released by a specially designed drone this morning, serves the purpose of consoling fans should their fears become reality, which appears likely given that Hull have lost every game against United since their promotion to the Premier League in 2008.
Naomi Totten, a Betfair spokeswoman, had this to say on the initiative:
"Relegation hits everyone hard. The club, the fans, the players. Unfortunately for Hull, they’ve been unable to deliver this season despite spending big in the transfer market. Their fans have been through the mill.
"While Hull City F.C will receive a £60 million Parachute Payment, their fans receive nothing of the sort. So here at Betfair, we’ve decided to give away a ‘Fan Parachute Payment’ of £5,000 in cash in an attempt to cheer up the people of Hull.
"We dropped it from a drone this morning and it’s now somewhere in the vicinity of the city. The first person who finds it, keeps it. Simple as that.”
The parachute package is GPS fitted and was last tracked to Western Hull, with Betfair releasing visual clues to the drop site via their social media channels and a YouTube video.
