The Elimination Chamber pay-per-view makes its return to the WWE calendar in under two weeks and one of the championships that will be defending inside of the steel structure is the WWE Tag Team Championship.
The odds are stacked against The New Day, as five other teams will attempt to dethrone them in what promises to be one of the more exciting Elimination Chamber matches in recent years.
The New Day will be going up against The Ascension, Prime Time Players, Cesaro & Tyson Kidd, The Lucha Dragons and Los Matadores.
The match will be a tornado tag format in what could be the most hectic and chaotic tag team match. This is because of the steel structure and the number of bodies in the ring at once. Members of each team will be locked inside of the Elimination Chamber pods while two teams battle it out in the ring in tornado tag rules, so if one member of a team is pinned or submits, that team is elimination, therefore raising the stakes a little bit more.
As fans we are usually complaining that the Tag Team Championship isn't given much attention compared to other belts, but this decision is a good one for the belts, as they will feel relevant in a match fans will genuinely want to see.
With six teams involved, there are obviously teams that will have no chance whilst others may surprise us at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, for me one of the teams that doesn’t stand a chance of surviving the Elimination Chamber are the Los Matadores. They might be good workers when they’re in the ring but they’ve never really been involved in a storyline which suggests they are legitimate threats to any champions. There have been rumours that they will be breaking away from El Torito soon too so maybe the tag team gold will continue to elude them.
The second team I believe stand no chance of capturing the Prime Time Players, for a similar reason to Los Matadores. They enter and leave the tag team scene when they please, they’re hardly ever threatening the champions and I don’t feel like sticking the gold on them is a step forward but it’s a huge step back. They are a talented team, full of charisma and they can work in the ring, Titus O’Neil is a highly underrated star and shouldn’t even be in the tag team scene because of his unique, monstrous look but the fact is he’s part of a tag team which doesn’t have a highly successful future.
I feel that The Ascension could be a team to keep an eye on, they’ve not had the best of luck since arriving on the main roster and they’ve suffered more losses than they’ve picked up wins but they picked up a win at an important time at the Payback pre-show, defeating The Mega Powers, hopefully they can turn things around and prove their doubters wrong in the Elimination Chamber, as it will already be one to remember it could help The Ascension move upwards at last.
The second dark horse in this has to be the Lucha Dragons. They’ve found great success on NXT and so far they haven’t really set the world alight, Kalisto is continuing to do a fantastic job of showcasing his impressive in-ring abilities and the WWE will definitely want to capitalise on their popularity, plus the fact that they were masks which will sell like hot cakes in the future. There’s a slight chance that because all of the attention will be elsewhere, The Lucha Dragons might just be able to pull one out of the bag.
Tyson Kidd & Cesaro are proving to be a highly entertaining tag team, plus the fact that they are two of the best wrestlers in the WWE today, I do think they will come close but I think the New Day will be able to retain their gold in the Elimination Chamber.
Tyson Kidd and Cesaro were great champions, they have unique chemistry inside and outside of the ring and fans were firmly on their side, but I feel the New Day have responded well to all of the negativity they have been getting from the fans, the three of them have worked well around this especially Xavier Woods who continues to entertain every single week, I think the New Day still have a lot more to offer and they should walk out with their gold intact.
