Manchester United have opened talks with Bayern Munich over a potential deal for Bastian Schweinsteiger, reports The Mail.
Louis van Gaal is convinced that Schweinsteiger will provide much needed experience to his midfield ahead of an expected Premier League title challenge next season.
He also wants more Champions League experience in his squad ahead of a return to the competition.

The report claims that Van Gaal spoke to United's executive vice chairman Ed Woodward about what Schweinsteiger could bring to the club.
Schweinsteiger, 30, is significantly older than the kind of players the Red Devils are trying to sign, but Van Gaal has convinced Woodward of the midfielder's worth and a deal is now very possible.

With just 12 months left on his contract, United are hopeful of agreeing a deal for under £10m. That would seem like a bargain, but Schweinsteiger would demand big wages and would have little sell on value.
However, such is Manchester United's financial power, they can afford such an outlay, as they proved by bringing Radamel Falcao to the club last summer.
Carrick's injury troubles
Michael Carrick plays a similar role to Schweinsteiger and recently agreed a one-year extension to his contract, but Van Gaal has been left concerned by the England international's injury record.
The added strain of European football means just a couple of injuries could leave Van Gaal worryingly short of quality options in the middle of the park.
Van Gaal worked with Schweinsteiger at Bayern Munich and knows he could make a significant difference to the team.
For the moment Manchester United are simply sounding out the player with regards to a move and have yet to decide whether or not to pursue a deal.
A gamble worth taking
With so much European experience and a massive reputation to boot, Schweinsteiger could be that kind of signing that makes a good squad a great one.
It may be a gamble, but with so much money in the bank, it is certainly one worth taking for Manchester United.
Is Bastian Schweinsteiger the man to bring Champions League glory to Old Trafford of just an old crock?
