Manchester United are interested in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer, according to a senior figure at Old Trafford.

The Daily Star’s chief sports writer Jeremy Cross has obtained exclusive quotes from the aforementioned source, who told Starsport: “Yes, Bastian Schweinsteiger is someone we are interested in signing.”

The report adds that United chiefs have held talks with the World Cup winner, whose contract at the Allianz Arena expires in the summer of 2016.

Schweinsteiger knows the current Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal from their time working together at Bayern Munich and would, according to reports, by open to the idea of reuniting with the veteran Dutch coach at Old Trafford.

He is understood to be disillusioned with life at Bayern since Pep Guardiola took charge in the summer of 2013, even though he has secured two more Bundesliga winners’ medals during that time.

Guardiola not a huge Schweinsteiger fan

It was reported last summer that Guardiola would have preferred to offload Schweinsteiger over Toni Kroos, who eventually joined Real Madrid.

Schweinsteiger was even offered to Manchester United, according to Spanish football expert Graham Hunter, because Guardiola felt the Germany international did not circulate possession quick enough.

United rejected the opportunity - Van Gaal was appointed manager of the Red Devils days before the story broke - but the Premier League giants are now set to return for the midfielder and could sign him for as little as £10 million.

United need Schweinsteiger

With Michael Carrick approaching his 34th birthday, Manchester United need a new first-class midfielder to ease the burden on the technically-gifted England international.

And the vastly-experienced Schweinsteiger - who has won eight Bundesliga titles, seven German Cups and the Champions League with Bayern Munich - could be the man who arrives through the gates of Old Trafford this summer.

United have also been linked with Schweinsteiger’s international teammate Ilkay Gundogan - whose girlfriend set tongues wagging by posting this Instagram photo this week - but it seems the Borussia Dortmund star is closer to a move to Barcelona, despite the fact the recently-crowned La Liga champions are prohibited from registering new players until January.

The likes of Juventus star Paul Pogba and Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal have also been linked with United in recent months but, because of his asking price and availability, Schweinsteiger could well become the Red Devils’ highest-profile summer acquisition.
