Mats Hummels won't join Manchester United, claims Michael Zorc

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has reiterated that Mats Hummels will not leave the club this summer.

The centre-back has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United with Louis van Gaal prepared to pay upwards of £32m to sign him.

With Borussia Dortmund falling out of the Champions League and Jurgen Klopp leaving at the end of the current campaign, it seemed natural that the club captain would follow suit.

However, Zorc then dropped a bombshell, claiming that Hummels had agreed to reject any offer from Old Trafford in favour of staying in Dortmund.

"It made sense that Mats was thinking about his future but I always pointed out that we plan [for the future] with him," he told Kicker earlier this week.

"But let's stick to the facts: Dortmund and Hummels have a clear consensus that he will be playing for us next season."

The new claim

Now Zorc has strengthened his claim by giving more detail to another German publication.

He told Ruhr Nachrichten: "At 26 years of age, it is normal to be considering your career, to be worrying about your future.

"But let's stick to the facts: Dortmund and Hummels have a clear consensus that he will be playing for us next season."

Still confident

Curiously, there was a report yesterday that Manchester United were still confident of agreeing a deal for the 26-year-old.

Apparently Old Trafford officials have been left unconcerned by the comments from Zorc and will continue to pursue a deal for Hummels.

Not only do they have a lot of money to offer, but also the prospect of playing in the Champions League next season.

Alternative options

For Van Gaal, he may have no other option to pursue Hummels as Manchester United do not seem to be close to any other centre-back in Europe.

There are reports that they have renewed their interest in Valencia star Nicolas Otamendi. The Argentinian has been linked with a move to the Red Devils in the past and has apparently remained in Van Gaal's sights.

The La Liga club will, however, only agree to sell if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. Valencia must better Sevilla's result when they take on Almeria on the final day of the season this weekend.

If they fail, a fee of around £36m will be sought to balance the books.

Are Manchester United wasting their time going after Mats Hummels or is the deal still alive?
