Barcelona legend Xavi has told fans to remember everything that friend and national side teammate Iker Casillas has done for Real Madrid and Spain in the past, reports The Mirror.
The Madrid goalkeeper has come under criticism from fans recently, and it is being heavily rumoured that he could depart the Bernabeu this summer after 17 years.
Los Blancos lost out on the La Liga title to Barcelona, were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by city rivals Atletico and failed to make the Champions League final when they were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Juventus.
“I don’t like what’s happening to Iker and it’s unfair what is going on,” said Xavi.
“He did so much for Madrid and Spain. I hope it all changes. He deserves better treatment.”
Jeers towards Casillas have been heard from sections of the Bernabeu crowd, and the Spaniard may feel his time in the capital is coming to a close, given Madrid’s interest in Manchester United goal keeper David de Gea.
Xavi and Casillas were both part of the Spanish side that dominated international football from 2008 – 2012. And, despite their El Clasico differences, the pair have always been good friends.
The goalkeeper has fallen out favour at Madrid before, when Jose Mourinho was boss. Casillas and the Portuguese manager reportedly had a disagreement because the former spoke to his Barca pal without Mourinho’s permission.
Xavi announced on Wednesday that he was leaving Barcelona to join Qatar side Al Saad at the end of the season. The Spaniard has been at the Catalan club since he was 11-years-old and has broke the record for the amount of Barca appearances.
Does Iker Casillas deserve to be treated better?
