Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has offered an insight into his early transfer plans for the summer by admitting that he is looking to strengthen the defensive-midfield position.
Veteran Michael Carrick is the de-facto choice in front of the back for United given his incredible range of passing and ability to read the game better than pretty much anyone else in the Premier League.
However, the England international’s recent injury record makes for poor reading from a United point of view, leaving Van Gaal forced to play Ander Herrera there at times this campaign.
The result is that the Dutchman feels he doesn’t have enough cover for a position that can be potentially decisive, leading him to confirm that he plans on improving it.
“Number 6 is a key player, yes. I have more key roles; the number 6 is just one of those key roles.
“You have seen this season, for example, because Michael Carrick is injured and I don’t have another, I have to play with Ander Herrera there.”
Big names, big players
Having already secured the services of Memphis Depay it will be exciting to see who Van Gaal opts for when the summer window actually opens.
A move to bring in another Dutch player would be an obvious option, though there are other European stars, chiefly the likes of Paul Pogba and Ilkay Gundogan, who might yet be available.
Both of those players would cost a pretty penny, Pogba in particular, but they’d be sure to slot seamlessly into Van Gaal’s plans and could offer plenty of years of service given their respective ages.
Of course the top names are always the hardest to acquire, and with United also said to be set on trying to land Gareth Bale, they may need to do a good deal of considering before they decide which midfield enforcer suits them best both playing wise and financially.
