Liverpool ace Glen Johnson has virtually confirmed that he will be leaving the club this summer, in a tweet posted put up a few hours before the Reds’ fixture against Stoke City.
The full-back has reportedly not been offered an extension by Liverpool despite the fact that his current contract is up at the end of the season, meaning that today’s game will have been his last for the club.
Fans hoping to see any last minute change of tact from Brendan Rodgers and his back-room staff will have been left bitterly disappointment by Johnson’s actions on Twitter, which appear to rule out the possibility of him staying.
After moving to Anfield from then-Premier League rivals Portsmouth in 2009, Johnson quickly established himself as the club’s leading right-back and has fulfilled that role essentially ever since. In recent times he’s come under harsh criticism from the fans, but few can argue that he hasn’t been a loyal servant nonetheless.
What awaits him in his post-Liverpool life remains to be seen, with no automatic suitors having been placed as natural favourites for his signature so far.
That said it’s unlikely he’ll drop out of the top bracket of clubs, be that in England or abroad, purely on the strength of his reputation as a dangerous attacking full-back.
Successor at Anfield
For Liverpool fans though the concern will switch to who will be installed as his long-term successor.
The likes of Emre Can and Javier Manquillo have deputised this year but Rodgers could look to invest in the transfer market given that Johnson’s perceived heir, Jon Flanagan, has been ruled out for a number of months with injury.
