Manchester United could sign Paris Saint-Germain right-back Gregory van der Wiel in a part-exchange deal involving Angel di Maria.
This is according to respected French publication L’Equipe, who understand that PSG are closing in on a deal for the Argentina international.
However, because of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations, PSG may need to offload one of their stars in order to complete the deal - and Van der Wiel is the player who could move in the opposite direction.
Another possible scenario is that PSG will sign Di Maria on loan, although it seems unlikely that Manchester United would agree to such a deal unless Louis van Gaal feels the former Real Madrid star no longer has a future at Old Trafford.
Di Maria, who United paid £59.7 million for last August, was handed his first start since March against Hull City on Sunday afternoon but lasted just 23 minutes before he was forced off with a hamstring problem.
Deal could make sense for all parties
The 27-year-old has endured a difficult debut season at Old Trafford - not helped by an attempted break-in at his house earlier this year - and may feel ready to end his Manchester United ordeal by joining the Ligue 1 champions this summer.
Van der Wiel, meanwhile, would be a useful addition to the Red Devils’ squad.
The 27-year-old, who has been capped 41 times by the Netherlands national team, would be an upgrade on both Rafael and Antonio Valencia.
Furthermore, Manchester United can still expect to receive a significant amount of cash from PSG - along with Van der Wiel - if they agree to offload the disappointing Di Maria.
