Radamel Falcao has thanked the Manchester United supporters via Instagram following his return to parent club AS Monaco.

The Colombian striker, who Louis van Gaal decided not to sign on a permanent deal following his disappointing loan spell at Old Trafford, expressed his gratitude with how he was treated by the Red Devils’ faithful during his nine months with the Premier League giants.

“I wanna thank @manchesterunited and all its fans for every word and gesture of support they gave me in every match,” the 29-year-old wrote. “I’ll never forget it!!

United confirmed Falcao had returned to Monaco hours after the 0-0 draw against relegated Hull City at the KC Stadium - a match in which the former FC Porto and Atletico Madrid superstar did not feature due to injury.

Speaking to Manchester United’s official website, Van Gaal said: "Falcao is a top professional and a good human being. On behalf of myself and everyone at the club I would like to wish him well for the future."

Falcao could return to the Premier League next season - the Guardian understand the South American striker has a preference to join Arsenal or Chelsea - although a return to La Liga appears more likely.

Valencia are believed to be keen on the forward, who scored four goals in 29 appearances for the Red Devils, while Atletico could also enter the race if Mario Mandzukic leaves the Vicente Calderon.
