Manchester United defender Tom Thorpe is set to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer after failing to cement a place in Louis van Gaal’s first team this season.
This is according to the Manchester Evening News, who suggest an Instagram post by Thorpe’s teammate Sean Goss indicates a decision has been made over the United Under-21 captain’s Old Trafford future.
Following the Under-21’s 3-1 defeat to local rivals Manchester City, Goss posted a photo on Instagram alongside the caption: “Disappointing result to finish the season today but been a good year, now time to get home for summer. Also all the best to @tomthorpe93.”
Thorpe has made just one first-team appearance for Manchester United - the final 111 seconds of the Red Devils’ win over West Ham back in September - despite his talent.
The former England Under-21 international, who spent time on loan at Birmingham City, has been overlooked by Van Gaal in favour of fellow youngsters Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett this season.
And speaking to MUTV, Thorpe admits that being left behind has been a little frustrating.
"You see the likes of Tyler and Paddy who have gone in and played, so you hope you can play yourself and you want to prove yourself,” he was quoted as saying by the MEN. "I want to play first-team football, so hopefully I can look forward to some of that in the future."
It now seems certain the Manchester-born 22-year-old will be amongst the group of players that leave Old Trafford this summer.
