There will be an awful lot of envious football fans this weekend. They might not like to admit it, but many Arsenal supporters might just be the most jealous of the lot.
Even a Scunthorpe United fan whose team never competes for the same honours is envious of Chelsea’s success, particularly when the cameras pan to supporters of the Blues cheering, dancing and smiling in the spring sun as their club celebrates and/or parades a trophy on a pitch in front of them. And wait until they see footage of the coach parade in the local town! Watch the Scunny fans RAGE! (I dunno, do you know any fans of The Iron?)
There have been accusations from all sides aimed at Jose Mourinho’s team; ‘boring’ being the main slur. And the most noise has come from north London. It’s now that matters, but Gunners’ fans can boast about their history and the 13 league titles and 11 FA Cups to Chelsea’s five and seven (dis)respectively).
The thing is, despite Arsenal winning the FA Cup last season and potentially another one this month, Chelsea, along with Manchester United, have dominated the honours list for the past decade – a time period that covers a fair bit of history.
For years it looked like Arsenal would be the first – or at least the most likely – London club to win the biggest prize in European football: the European Cup/Champions League.
That is a baton Chelsea supporters can whack Gunners fans with forever, especially if it is history that wins 99 percent of the arguments, as many followers of Arsenal and Liverpool would have you believe.
It must be gutting for Arsenal fans, but if they can overtake the Blues’ Champions League tally at some point then they will not be that bothered. Easier said than done (what isn’t?), but if the Gunners sign a top-class defender and striker or two then they and their fans may just get that feeling and stop envying Chelsea.
