Manchester United and Liverpool look set to go head-to-head for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke in the upcoming transfer window.
This has been reported by the Telegraph, who claim that Benteke is Liverpool's priority transfer target, with the Reds set to bid for him after this weekend's FA Cup final.
It appears, then, that the Merseyside club's chief Brendan Rodgers is determined to secure the services of the in-form striker sooner rather than later. Benteke, of course, has been outstanding in the second half of the season under the guidance of Tim Sherwood, having found the back of the net on 12 occasions in his last 12 appearances.
The report goes on to reveal that Liverpool decided a number of weeks ago that they wanted to land Benteke in the summer, but it appears that it won't be easy for the club to bring him to Anfield.
Ultimately, the same report claims that the Belgian international could cost up to £30 million, with Manchester United seemingly monitoring the player's situation.
United, much like Liverpool, look set to add to their striker options over the coming months, and it appears that Benteke could yet end up at Old Trafford.
Villa, though, still hold hope of keeping the forward at the club despite major interest from two of the Premier League's biggest sides. In fact, Villa boss Tim Sherwood believes the player will sign an extension to his current £50,000-a-week contract, according to the same report.
One thing's for sure, it looks set to be a busy summer for all those involved in the Benteke saga, with the race to sign him gathering pace.
Both in need
Let's be honest: Benteke would prove a fine signing for either of Manchester United or Liverpool. At the end of the day, over the course of the past couple of years, the striker has proven his credentials in England's elite division, so would no doubt continue to score goals at the highest level.
The striker would only add another dimension to either club's attack, as he'd prove a heavyweight in the final third of the pitch.
Liverpool are certainly in need: Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert haven't been good enough this season, while England international Daniel Sturridge has failed to maintain his fitness. It's clear the club have to improve up front after a poor season in front of goal.
Manchester United, too, have their problems: Radamel Falcao, of course, has returned to Monaco, while Dutchman Robin van Persie hasn't been able to hit top form since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. Benteke, even at £30m, is seemingly worth the gamble.
