Christian Benteke will be giving Arsenal “sleepless nights” ahead of the FA Cup Final, according to his Aston Villa teammate Ashley Westwood.
Westwood told Goal that the Belgian frontman is now back to his best after an injury lay-off which will strike fear into the Arsenal defence.
Benteke has been heavily linked with a transfer this summer following his impressive form since Tim Sherwood took over as manager, which Westwood says is down to a return to full fitness.
“I think he’s back to full fitness now, he was struggling with his Achilles early on and people didn’t see that, they just expected him to walk straight back in and fire in the goals,” said the 25-year-old.
“But he’s back to his best now, bullying defenders and I’m sure they’ll have sleepless nights. They won’t want to be playing against him.
“If we play like we can do, we can match anyone. We’ve got internationals throughout the team, Fabs [Fabian Delph] and Clevs [Tom Cleverly] are on form, Christian is a real handful for anyone. I’m sure they’ll be having sleepless nights about him.”
Benteke to move on?
Benteke has scored 13 goals since Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert, compared to just three when Lambert was at the helm earlier this season.
The 24-year-old’s upturn in performance steered the Villans to safety as well as a first final in 15 years, equalising against Liverpool in the Semi-Final. Sherwood previously stated it would be difficult to keep his star man and reports suggest that Liverpool and Manchester United are tracking him.
If the midlands side are to have any hope of keeping him over the summer, then a win to secure European football at Villa Park next season may be there best bet.
