Iker Casillas ready to welcome David de Gea to Real Madrid

Published 2 Comments

Iker Casillas has once again reiterated his desire to see David de Gea join Real Madrid from Manchester United this summer.

The legendary goalkeeper also stated that he intends to remain at the Bernabeu for the foreseeable future even if De Gea does arrive.

He had been tipped to leave the club if they decided to sign the Red Devils shot stopper, but Casillas is ready to stay and compete for the No.1 jersey with his international team-mate.

De Gea has just 12 months remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford and seems ready to reject a new £200,000-a-week contract in order to force an exit this summer.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez sees De Gea as the perfect successor to Casillas, 33, but is apparently unwilling to turn his back on one of the club's most decorated players.

"De Gea is a great bloke and a goalkeeper for the present and the future."

Given his blessing

However, Casillas has given his blessing to his club to negotiate a deal for De Gea by saying his future at the club is not dependent on him being the first choice goalkeeper.

He is quoted in AS as saying: “If De Gea does come here, he'll be welcomed.

"Competition is healthy – there is no clause in my contract which states that I have to be first choice; we'll have to compete for a place like we do with Spain.

"De Gea is a great bloke and a goalkeeper for the present and the future. He can handle pressure and the experience he has had at Manchester United will have served him well."

Another problem

While Casillas might be happy to see De Gea join Real Madrid, it does not mean that De Gea would be happy to move to the Bernabeu with Casillas still present.

The 24-year-old has a guaranteed first-team place at Manchester United and may not fancy the risk of becoming a bench warmer while Casillas sees out the remaining two-years on his Real Madrid contract.

De Gea may be looking for some reassurances over his potential role in the first-team squad before deciding to force his way out of Old Trafford.

Should David de Gea leave Manchester United for Real Madrid even if it means sitting on the bench?
