Bayern Munich star Philipp Lahm has revealed that Manchester United previously approached him over a move to Old Trafford.
As reported by Squawka, the versatile German, who captained his country to World Cup success in Brazil last summer, has revealed that he considered moving to England, claiming the Premier League 'was an interesting possibility'.
In fact, as well as United's interest, the 31-year-old has confirmed that Spanish giants Barcelona were also interested in his signature, however he decided to stay on in the Bundesliga with Bayern.
Lahm told Squawka: “Yes, as a player you always think about your options, and there was a time where Manchester United made an approach for me – and Barcelona looked at me too – so I considered life in England or Spain.
"The Premier League was an interesting possibility. But in the end I decided to stay in Germany."
And now, after great success at the Bavarians in recent years, Lahm has insisted that he made the right choice by staying at the club despite admitting that England may well have been 'nice'.
He continued by saying: “Bayern is my home town club and I thought good things could happen for the club, so I signed on for more years, and it proved to be the right decision.
"I felt we had the chance to win the Champions League, and I was was right. I’d rather win it with my club, my home town team, than with any other. So England might have been nice – but I am glad I stayed in Germany.”
There's no doubt about it, Lahm would have proved a fine coup for Manchester United, but where do they need to improve this summer?
Of course, much will depend on outgoings, but surely Van Gaal has to strengthen in near enough every department this summer. At the end of the day, finishing fourth in the Premier League with United is all well and good, but they must kick on next season.
It's far from certain as to whether David de Gea will stay on at the club, but in Victor Valdes the club already have a fine replacement. A defender or two must arrive, with a new right-back seemingly essential.
In midfield, despite having a number of options, Van Gaal may well want to improve, and Borussia Dortmund man Ilkay Gundogan would make a fantastic signing.
Memphis Depay, of course, is already on his way to the club, but it wouldn't be entirely surprising if the club entered the market for an out-and-out striker after the departure of Monaco man Radamel Falcao. One thing's for sure, it looks set to be another exciting summer for fans of Manchester United.
