Manchester United have entered into negotiations over a possible deal for Bayern Munich star Dante, according to reports coming out of Germany.
Popular German sports magazine Kicker has published information on its website today alluding to the fact that recent reports suggesting Dante is a primary target for Louis van Gaal might not be nonsense after all.
The majority of speculation surrounding the potential deal has been rejected without too much consideration by most fans. After all, Dante appears perfectly happy in Bavaria and with Pep Guardiola’s side in a substantially better position than Van Gaal’s United two and two seems to make five.
However, the report in Kicker uses Bayern’s apparent interest in securing a deal for Angel di Maria - another tenuous link we must admit - as fuel for the claim that negotiations between the German champions and their English counterparts have been ongoing. What’s more United have reportedly made a concrete proposal for Dante, though no serious headway has been made as of yet.
Once more this term the Brazilian has been a regular fixture in Guardiola’s back-line, featuring seven times in the Champions League and 27 times in the Bundesliga.
Such numbers can comfortably rule out the theory that he’s surplus to requirements at the Allianz Arena, and unless Guardiola has a plan to directly replace him with another centre-back next year it’s difficult to see why he’d let him join United.
The Spaniard’s purported desire to land Di Maria isn’t too ridiculous given that both Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben - two players Bayern have built their success around in recent years - are pushing on towards the end of their careers, but even so one would think Dante could be left out of negotiations if Guardiola really wanted it.
Dante the leader?
If the report does transpire to be genuine then United fans can begin to get excited. Dante is an experienced defensive asset who has a solid reputation and the miles on the clock to serve as evidence as to his suitability as a potential leader.
That said he will turn 32 this year, and Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels can offer just as much but for far longer.
Just where the negotiations between United and Bayern go from here remains to be seen, though with the speculation constantly shifting to suit various papers and sources we’d advise against buying into the idea that Dante will be playing at Old Trafford come the first game of next season.
