Per Mertesacker on why Arsenal didn’t win the Premier League this year

Published Add your comment

Arsenal came close to competing for the Premier League title based on the second-half of the season but it just wasn’t enough thanks to their sluggish start. Could it be that the World Cup hangover had an adverse impact on their chances? Per Mertesacker certainly thinks so. The retired Germany international has revealed his belief that the knock-on effect from football’s premier tournament might have cost Arsenal their shot at pipping the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City to England’s biggest prize. Well, we guess that means they’ve got no excuse come next year. Elsewhere Aaron Ramsey has poured scorn on rumours suggesting he could be signed by Barcelona this summer. The Wales international revealed he wasn’t paying the speculation any heed, and labelled the gossip mere paper talk. Seen as though Barcelona are under a transfer ban until 2016 we think we agree Aaron.
