Tom Cleverley has admitted that he struggled with confidence at Manchester United, insisting that Real Madrid star Gareth Bale is going through a similar situation at Real Madrid.
As reported by the Telegraph, Cleverley, who is set to take part in the FA Cup final with Aston Villa later today, believes Bale is a 'fantastic player', but is thinking about things too much as he goes about making a success of his career at the Bernabeu.
Cleverley, of course, endured a nightmare campaign at Old Trafford under the guidance of David Moyes last season, but has enjoyed a successful spell at Villa Park this term.
And after his failed attempt at proving his credentials in Manchester, the midfield ace has insisted that every player relies on confidence.
Confidence is key
The England international stated: “Everyone is a confidence player. At times last year, it was my first taste of getting really criticised and that got magnified when you play at a massive club like United.
"Sometimes I struggled with that. Sometimes things don’t come naturally. I see it with other players. Gareth Bale’s a fantastic player but you can tell he’s thinking about things a little bit.”
Bale, of course, has been linked with a stunning move to Manchester United of late, but it remains to be seen as to whether the Welsh wizard goes in search of leaving the Spanish capital behind anytime soon.
One thing's for sure, he will be determined to rediscover his best form next season, and he can certainly do that in Madrid.
Bale can still shine
At the end of the day, Bale is one of the most talented footballers in world football, so there's no reason why he can't prove himself sooner rather than later. Of course, with such intense pressure at Real, it was never going to be easy for the ex-Spurs man, but he will surely be determined to prove his critics wrong.
There is, of course, a chance that he will return to England's elite division one day, but Manchester United and Co. may well have to wait a little while longer yet.
