Benfica winger Nicholas Gaitan insists nobody from Manchester United has contacted him, amid reports the Red Devils are poised to complete a €30 million deal to secure his services.
It was reported earlier this week that United are on the brink of finalising a deal for the Argentina international, but the 27-year-old insists this isn’t the case.
Speaking after Benfica’s 2-1 victory over Maritimo in the Portuguese Cup final on Friday night, Gaitan confirmed nobody has contacted him, and that he would like to stay at Benfica beyond this summer.
"I'm used to talks of Man United, I've heard about for the last five years,” the South American, who is also on the radar of Chelsea, was quoted as saying by Portuguese football writer Jan Hagen. “No one has talked to me. I've a contract here.
"This was the last trophy with Benfica, this season, yes. I'd like to stay, let's see what happens."
Hagen, however, believes there’s a good chance Gaitan has played his final match with Benfica, even though the player added: "If it was my last game in a Benfica shirt? Yes, for this season. I haven't received any offers, neither yesterday or today."
As the player himself acknowledges, Gaitan has been linked with Manchester United on multiple occasions over the past few seasons.
That Louis van Gaal would sign the purchase with the likes of Angel di Maria, Ashley Young, Adnan Januzaj, Juan Mata and Memphis Depay already at his disposal would be a little unusual.
But if at least one of those players leaves Old Trafford over the forthcoming weeks, the situation could change quickly.
