Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in signing Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain this summer.
This is according to respected Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who understand United boss Louis van Gaal - equipped with millions of pounds at his disposal to use in the transfer market this summer - may attempt to sign the Argentina international.
Arsenal are also keen on the 27-year-old, who has scored 26 goals in 50 appearances for Napoli this season, as is Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone.
Manchester United, despite their expenditure over the past 12 months, are expected to spend big again this summer following a satisfactory but unspectacular campaign.
A new striker is imperative, following the departure of Radamel Falcao, and Higuain could be the perfect replacement.
Higuain has €100m release clause
However, Napoli have no intention of selling the former Real Madrid star, whose contract contains an astronomical €100 million release clause.
Whether Manchester United are prepared to pay that extraordinary amount of money is unclear, but Van Gaal will be acutely aware that his side required a centre-forward who can guarantee at least 20 goals a season - and there are few of them available.
Wayne Rooney finished the 2014-15 campaign as United’s top scorer with 12 Premier League goals.
Higuain’s former teammate Karim Benzema has also been linked with the Red Devils this week, but the recently-departed Napoli head coach Rafael Benitez is expected to ask Florentino Perez to keep the France international at the Bernabeu once he is officially unveiled as Real Madrid manager next week.
