Manchester United’s record signing Angel di Maria has asked to leave Old Trafford this summer.
This is according to beIN Sports presenter Richard Keys - formerly of Sky Sports - who has heard from a source that the Argentina international has expressed his desire to leave the Red Devils after a difficult debut season in the Premier League.
Keys also hinted that Di Maria could be headed to Paris Saint-Germain, who have been strongly linked with the 27-year-old over recent months.
PSG wanted to sign Di Maria last summer, but were unable to finance a deal due to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.
The former Real Madrid star subsequently ended up at Manchester United, who paid a British record transfer fee worth £59.7 million, but his first season at Old Trafford has been a mixture of frustration and disappointment.
Di Maria has not settled at United
Di Maria has struggled for form and fitness over the past nine months, while a burglary attempt at his Prestbury mansion earlier this year clearly had a negative impact on both the player and his family.
That incident appears to be one of the primary reasons why Di Maria has struggled to settle in north-west England - and Manchester United could cash in on the South American if PSG submit a big enough offer.
Louis van Gaal admitted earlier this month that whether Di Maria stays or goes will ultimately depend on the player himself.
“The manager and the club is always dependable on the opinion of the player himself,” the Dutchman was quoted as saying by the Guardian. “The player decides; we shall see what he decides.
“He cannot say that he has had a marvellous season here. The decision is not only to him because now we have a contract, so we shall speak always with every player, evaluation, as I always do. Then we speak with each other about the future, and that is with every player.”
