Arsenal are interested in signing Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke but only if their bid to sign Porto star Jackson Martinez fails, reports The Sunday Mail.
Benteke failed to impress against the Gunners in Saturday's FA Cup final, but has still got a fan in Arsene Wenger.
Olivier Giroud has come under fire from the likes of Thierry Henry in recent weeks, with many suggesting Arsenal won't win major titles while he is leading the line.
Wenger appears to agree is looking to sharpen up his attack ahead of a Premier League title challenge next season and has placed the Belgian near the top of his transfer list.
Just above him is Martinez, who has been firing in goals for Porto once again this season. The Colombian scored an impressive seven goals in this season's Champions League and also took home Portugal's golden boot with 21 goals in the domestic league.
His goal return took his total to 67 goals in just 90 games for Porto and Wenger believes that return is proof that he can make it in a much more physical Premier League.
Porto want £27m for the striker and that is why Wenger is now considering Benteke. The Aston Villa hitman is available for £32m – £5m more – but would come with a proven track record in English football.
However, he would have to compete with Liverpool, Manchester Untied and Chelsea, who are all interested in Benteke as well.
Jose Mourinho is looking for a powerhouse forward to replace Didier Drogba while Louis van Gaal wants more than one striker to freshen up his attacking options.
Both, however, are currently exploring other options with Chelsea linked with Radamel Falcao and Manchester United now targeting Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain.
Liverpool see Benteke as a top target, but do not have Champions League football to offer.
Should Arsenal sign Christian Benteke or Jackson Martinez?
