Manchester United are closing in on Benfica playmaker Nico Gaitan but the €30m-rated midfielder will only join once Louis van Gaal trims his squad.

The Dutchman has a number of attacking midfield options, including Antonio Valencia, Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj, Angel Di Maria, Ashley Young, and Marouane Fellaini.

As a result, Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claims that van Gaal will look to offload Di Maria before moving ahead for Gaitan.

A deal is reportedly already agreed between Manchester United and Benfica for the Old Trafford club to match his asking price - thought to be around the €30m/€35m mark.

Liverpool have also been strongly linked with the Argentinian, but may face more disappointment after also going head to head with United and losing for Dutch international forward Memphis Depay.

The other option for Gaitan should a move to Manchester United collapse would be Valencia. The La Liga side are looking to strengthen after securing Champions League football for next season and Gaitan is one of a number of targets.

Here’s a screenshot of the Gaitan report in O Jogo that mentions the Di Maria sale angle…

Di Maria did not enjoy the most successful of debut seasons in English football after becoming the Premier League’s most expensive ever signing last summer.

It would still be a surprise though to see van Gaal cut his losses on the talented former-Real Madrid star already, as the lithe playmaker could be a real difference maker as United themselves return to the Champions League next season.

What do you think Manchester United fans - keep Di Maria or move him on and bring in Gaitan?
