Chelsea have ruled out the possibility of selling Diego Costa despite reports he wants to quit the club and return to Atletico Madrid, reports The Evening Standard.

Reports in Spain have claimed that the striker had grown disillusioned with life in west London and misses the food, weather and culture of the Spanish capital.

Costa has formed a strong relationship with Jose Mourinho, but is said to have simply failed to settle into life at Stamford Bridge.

He is willing to take a significant pay-cut from his £180,000-a-week wages to complete a move back to the Vicente Calderon this summer.

But while Costa may not have settled into life in London, he has certainly settled into life in the Premier League.

Chelsea's decision

The 26-year-old scored an impressive 20 goals in just 26 Premier League games in his debut season, playing a key role in Chelsea's title winning campaign.

Mourinho now sees the Brazilian-born star as a key part in his plan to build a dynasty with Chelsea and, as a result, he is unwilling to let him leave the club.

They will resist any attempt from Atletico to take Costa back, even if it is more than the £32m they paid to take him last summer.

Struggling in England

Costa's goal scoring form faded in the second half of the season as Premier League defenders started to target him with tough tackles and tight marking.

His short temper was seen as a potential weakness and many tried to exploit it. The result was less goals and a growing discontent for the Premier League.

He has also struggled to learn the language and may also be struggling with the idea of not having a winter break; something many newcomers regularly criticise.

The value of an unhappy player

Unfortunately, if the reports are true then Chelsea may have little choice but to allow Costa to return to Spain.

An unhappy player in the dressing room is certain to harm to morale and Chelsea may be able to negotiate a deal for another one of their targets, Antoine Griezmann, if they agree to sell Costa back to him.
