After a difficult rookie season in the NFL that culminated with checking into a rehab facility, Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel appeared to be doing all the right things this offseason to get himself back on track.
But, after receiving praise from his teammates and having been the subject of positive reports recently, the under pressure QB threatened to undo a lot of good work when he wound up in the headlines this weekend after reportedly throwing a water bottle at an over-zealous fan.
Fortunately for Manziel, although police were called, no formal charges were made and Manziel's team have since stated that the former A&M star was being harassed. Now new reports have revealed just exactly what the fan said to Manziel to get him so riled up.
According to one of Manziel's friends who was with him at the Byron Nelson Classic gold tournament, a man seeking a picture with the NFL player threw out a couple of taunts in his direction:
Per the ESPN report:
"As Manziel left the golf course, the fan yelled, 'good luck never starting in the NFL,' the friend said. Manziel said “What?” and threw the bottle, which the friend claimed was empty, toward the ground."
The same friend goes on to claim that the 'fan' had one more one-line for Johnny Manziel as he left the course, telling the much-maligned quarterback "Ryan Tannehill is way better than you."
Ultimately it appears that the whole incident was simply a case of Manziel failing to keep him cool as an obnoxious fan wound him up and, despite the headlines, the Browns are unlikely to take issue with the player over it.
Likewise, Johnny Manziel can hardly really take issue with being told that Ryan Tannehill is "way better" than him.
As things stand, Manziel is fighting to keep his NFL career alive after a year that saw him complete just 18 passes and throw two interceptions in his first ever start - a game that ended with a 0-30 reverse.
Tannehill meanwhile, despite having his detractors during his four years in the league, has just been handed a second contract with the Miami Dolphins and ranked amongst the top 10 quarterbacks in the league in 2014.
