Marcos Rojo may have dropped a big hint about Manchester United’s next signing by favouriting a tweet urging him to convince Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi to join the Red Devils.
The tweet in question, sent by Twitter user @Anderology, said: “@marcosrojo5 make sure you talk to @Notamendi30 and tell him to finish up his deal with @ManUtd quickly!”
Rumours are rife that Manchester United will sign Otamendi this summer - and Rojo’s decision to favourite the aforementioned tweet has added yet more fuel to the fire.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claimed last week that Otamendi, an Argentina international teammate of Rojo, will push to sign for Manchester United in the upcoming transfer window.
However, it’s understood that Valencia - who are now owned by the billionaire Peter Lim - will not sell their star defender for anything less than his €50 million (£36 million) release clause.
Otamendi has been superb this season
Otamendi, 27, played in all but three of Valencia’s league matches this season - a total of 35 - scoring an impressive six goals in the process.
The South American defender netted a precious goal on the final day of the season - in a 3-2 win against Almeria - to help Valencia secure Champions League football next season at the expense of Sevilla.
He will be playing in the Champions League next season, but it could be with Manchester United who are on the lookout for a new top-level centre-back.
It seems increasingly unlikely that United will sign Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels, but the fact Otamendi reportedly wants a move to Old Trafford and has that £36 million buyout clause means he is a realistic transfer target for Louis van Gaal.
It’s possible that United scouts will take a closer look at Otamendi when the Copa America gets underway later this month. The defender has been named in Gerardo Martino’s 23-man squad alongside both Rojo and Angel di Maria.
Do United need another centre-back?
But do Manchester United need to pay such a large fee for yet another central defender?
Van Gaal already has Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Paddy McNair, Tyler Blackett and Rojo at his disposal - and even if Evans leaves, which seems likely, he will be left with four players competing for two positions.
Some will argue that McNair and Blackett are not quite ready for regular first-team football at Old Trafford and that, as a result, Van Gaal needs to spend big on another quality centre-back to provide Smalling and Jones with some much-needed competition.
But is Otamendi the answer?
