Many may not be familiar with Algeria's top flight but it's a lot more interesting than you might think. MC El-Eulma were relegated at the weekend despite winning 3-0 as other results go against them.
Incredibly, only 15 points separated the champions ES Setif, from bottom of the table Bel Abbes. Even crazier, the leagues top scorers MC El-Eulma were axed from the league after finishing in the relegation zone.
Despite the efforts of the divisions top scorer Walid Derrardja, the team nicknamed 'Babia' dropped into the second tier. The side based just off the coast of north Africa reached the last eight of this season's African Champions League.
Maybe this cup run distracted them from their league campaign. However they will have reason to feel sorry for themselves while they battle for promotion next year as they only finished 10 points off being crowned champions. If only one result had gone differently, what a season it could have been for the African outfit.
The quality of football on show in this league may not be the best, but what could be more exciting than one game possibly crowning your team champions or condemning them to relegation.
The fine margins between ecstasy and despair is what makes football so compelling, and nowhere are these margins so small as in the Algerian Ligue 1.
