When AJ Lee retired from WWE merely days after WrestleMania 31 this year the Divas Division looked like it would never recover.
Lee had controlled the division for years, was a three time Divas Champion and the longest reigning champion at 295 days before Paige defeated her the day after WrestleMania last year.
Since she has left, Tamina and Naomi have become forces in the division and Paige has returned but neither have been able to halt the run of current champion Nikki Bella.
The former Bella Twin defeated AJ with the help from her sister Brie at last year's Survivor Series Pay-per-view before thwarting every challenge AJ put up to regain the championship. But, surprisingly, the year has been dominated by pay-per-view tag team matches from the divas as seen at The Royal Rumble, WrestleMania and Payback.
That being said, Nikki has successfully defended her title numerous times this year on Raw and even defeated Paige last night thanks to Twin Magic, but for the first time WWE were making a big deal about her holding the title for 190 days.
threat to record
Could this be the real reason why the championship has hardly been defended on pay-per-view this year? Could WWE be trying to erase the record they gave to AJ Lee before she decided to walk away from the company that gave her fame?
Lee, along with husband CM Punk, hold the two longest reigning records in WWE after his exceptional 434 day run as WWE Champion, something that WWE would never be able to replicate after they decided to unify both world titles back in 2013.
That isn't the case with the Divas, though. Nikki could very well hold the title for another 100 days and, after dropping the title to someone like Charlotte or Sasha Banks, she could then recapture the gold and become a record equalling three time champion along with Maryse and AJ Lee.
Easy road ahead?
It was heavily predicted and rumoured that Nikki would drop the championship at Elimination Chamber, but she didn't and it seems she has had an easy 191 day reign with her sister helping her win every match except the one at Elimination Chamber on Sunday.
It would be easy for WWE to keep the Championship on her for a while longer given that she pinned Naomi on Sunday taking her out of the picture, and Paige last night meaning that right now there are no challengers for her championship. So if there was any good time for one of the NXT divas to make their presence known, it would be now.
You have to think WWE have opened the Divas Division up now for a debut and a decent rivalry between Nikki and whoever her next opponent is. Given the quality of the female wrestling down in NXT, this could signal a big change for the division.
