Nacho Monreal has confirmed that he doesn’t want to leave Arsenal this summer, despite the fact that Athletic Bilbao are keen on launching a move for him.
With the Spaniard’s contract set to expire next year the focus will very much in on Arsene Wenger during the close season with regards to whether or not he opts to dispense of his services. In recent months Monreal has been the preferred option to Kieran Gibbs, and started in the left-back berth in the FA Cup final victory over Aston Villa last weekend.
Monreal wants to stay
That said questions marks have frequently hung over his suitability as a top-level full-back, and as a result Wenger could decide to get rid before his big Premier League title push next season. Monreal, as relayed by the Daily Mirror, has made it clear he wants to stay.

One thing’s for sure, and that’s that Arsenal won’t be recouping too much money for his signature either way. The 29-year-old won’t likely be sold simply in a bid to raise funds as he’s not that much of an attractive proposition, even to a La Liga club, and with a year left on his current deal the asking price probably wouldn’t be set too high anyway.
That said of the current squad he is one of the members who stands out as being disposable, particularly if Wenger is keen on improving the defensive solidity of his back-line.
Monreal is fine going forward but lacks the strength and positional awareness to be a world-class defender in the mould of Ashley Cole.
It’s already virtually guaranteed that Wenger will be looking to dip into the market for a new goalkeeper, with neither Wojciech Szczesny or David Ospina having looked impressive.
A defensive midfielder could also be on the radar - Morgan Schneiderlin, Ilkay Gundogan and Geoffrey Kondogbia have all been mooted as potential options - meaning that the addition of a new left-back will fall further down the list of priorities.
