Chelsea are closing in on a loan deal for AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, according to the Daily Star's chief football writer David Woods.
Falcao spent a disappointing season on loan at Manchester United, scoring just four goals in 29 Premier League appearances.
Louis van Gaal had the option to make the arrangement permanent, but instead chose to send the Colombian back to Monaco.
The Ligue 1 club have since been working hard to get his £265,000-a-week wages off the books and luckily found interest from another Premier League club, Chelsea.
Jose Mourinho believes he has what it takes to get the best out of Falcao and knows it will be a tremendous victory over his managerial rival Van Gaal if he does so.
They are now in advanced talks with Monaco over another season-long loan deal and are hopeful of completing it in the near future.
A Chelsea source told Woods: "Talks have been going well and Jose is still a big fan of Falcao, despite the difficult time he had at United.
"It looks like the deal is going to happen."
The negotiations between Falcao and Stamford Bridge officials were certainly made simpler by the fact that both Mourinho and the striker share the same agent in Jorge Mendes.
Everyone's favourite agent has been key to bringing this deal to the point that it is and has helped to fend off competition from the likes of Sevilla and Zenit St Petersburg in the process.
A risk worth taking
Manchester United's deal to bring the 29-year-old to Old Trafford for one season cost them a staggering £16m in total. That included a £6m one-off fee and £10m in wages.
Chelsea will be hoping Falcao's poor form will allow them to negotiate a big discount, but the Blues will have the money spare to complete a deal even if Monaco don't budge.
Considering the potential Falcao has and their need to replace Didier Drogba, the Colombian is certainly a risk worth taking.
The potential bragging rights Mourinho would get over Van Gaal in Falcao does flourish in west London would be priceless.
Should Chelsea be trying to sign Radamel Falcao?
